How Do I Pick Between Python or R?

Both Python and R are excellent programming languages for data science. In fact, both are widely used for Biomedical sciences, so you can’t go wrong with either choice.

What’s most important is that you learn one language at a time. That’ll ensure a smoother learning journey without the extra confusion caused by programming language mix-ups. Once you have mastered one programming language, then you can try learning others.

If you’re just starting out, choose the programming language used by your friends and colleagues. That way, they can support you as you are learning. In addition, once you’re ready to take on larger projects, it’ll be easier to find folks to collaborate with. For those of you who are curious, you can learn more about the Python vs R in this Udacity blog article.

Once I have decided, then what?

UCSF Data Science Initiative offers introductory workshops for both Python and R, so be sure to check upcoming workshops regularly or check out our class materials on the CLE. If you have any additional questions or would just like to connect with us, don’t hesitate to contact us.
