Assessment Tools to Support Instruction

Evaluating student performance is a crucial part of instruction. UCSF provides access and support for a variety of tools to help you build and deliver online assessments. The steps outlined here will help you determine the most appropriate assessment tool to meet your needs.

Step 1: Identify your assessment objective/type.

Types of Assessments

  • Student Self-Evaluation: Students monitor their own learning and understanding.
  • Formative Assessments: Monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Summative Assessments: Evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit.

Step 2: Evaluate available tools and consider the following:

  • How complex is the assessment?
  • Necessary features and the pros and cons of each tool.
  • What is the start up effort or learning curve for the tool?
    • Easy = ~2-5 hours
    • Moderate = ~5-10 hours
