Media@UCSF: Playlists

Overview: Playlist

There are several options to share video content in the CLE; creating a playlist allows you to easily share a collection of videos with your course participants. Videos that are collected into a playlist will appear in a single video player (below) so viewers can navigate freely between them. After you've created a playlist, it can be embedded into your course.

Embed a Playlist

After the playlist has been created, you can direct students to the Media Gallery or add the playlist to the course page. Adding a playlist to the course is a similar process to adding single videos.

  1. Log in to the CLE and open your course (must have an editing role in the course).
  2. Turn Edit mode on.
  3. Go to the section where you want to place the Playlist and select the Add an activity or resource.
  4. From the Activity Chooser, select Media Resource.
  5. Add a title and description for the resource, then select Add Media.
  6. From the pop-up window, select Media Gallery Playlists and find the playlist.
  7. Select the gear icon to adjust the Embed Settings, then select Embed.

  8. When you've completed the Media Resource setup, select Save and return to course.

Playlists can also be directly embedded onto the course page or other resources such as pages, assignments, etc. For more on sharing and embedding videos, please review Media@UCSF: Uploading and Sharing.

Modify a Playlist

Note: Edits to a playlist will affect all instances of the playlist embedded in a course. There is no 'undo' once you delete or modify a playlist.

  1. Log in to the CLE and open your course (must have an editing role in the course).
  2. Select More from the Secondary navigation menu.
  3. Select Media Gallery from the dropdown.
  4. From the Channel Actions menu, select Edit.

  5. Select the Playlists tab.
  6. You will see a list of previously created playlists. Under Actions, you can edit or delete your playlist.

Rolling-Over Playlists

If you teach the same course over multiple terms, you may be familiar with the CLE course 'rollover' process. Support staff create a new, empty course shell and import content from the previous term's course. Media Gallery content does not rollover along with other course content during this process. There are a few extra steps involved to roll over playlists, but the process is quick and simple:

    1. Log in to the CLE and open your new CLE course.
    2. Select More from the Secondary navigation menu.
    3. Select Media Gallery from the dropdown.
    4. From the Channel Actions menu, select Import.
    5. Find your new CLE course, and then select Import.

Note: This process does not change the owner or location of the original videos. They will still exist in the original owner's My Kaltura Media repository.
